Stained: An Anthology of Writing About Menstruation

Stained celebrates the uterus bearing body in all of its permutations. It’s a body that has long remained a site of contention and conflict; for centuries we have navigated social perceptions which stigmatize, marginalize, and undermine the female fertility cycle. Our writers are from all walks of life, many, varied racial cultures, socio-economic backgrounds, sexual orientations, various countries and languages. Our youngest writer is just fifteen years old, our oldest is eighty-three! We were awed by the trust with which these authors shared their most vulnerable experiences. The courageous stories and poems in this anthology deserve a wide audience.
We also recognize that Critical Menstruation Studies is a new discipline that will become more mainstream with time. The first textbook for this discipline, The Palgrave Handbook of Critical Menstruation Studies, was published in 2020. We believe that this anthology, which will include an index of topics ranging from "abortion" to "uterus," can be used as a companion to any textbook on this important subject.
